Frequently Asked Questions

General

  • What is Areobooks?
  • Areobooks is a platform for authors and readers to meet, read and connect. It’s an online marketplace where every author has his or her own stall. Readers browse the stalls, talking to authors and buying books from them directly. Areobooks encourages fair trade because prices aren’t artificially inflated or deflated and the majority of the money spent on books goes to authors.
  • Who can use Areobooks?
  • Areobooks is for everyone! Whether you’re an indie author, a traditionally published author or a hybrid of the two Areobooks is for you.
  • How does Areobooks work?
  • Areobooks is a platform. Anyone can create an Author Page, upload and sell their ebooks through Areobooks. Areobooks is an ebook retailer only; it doesn’t have its own e-reading app or e-reading device. However, because authors can upload ebooks in multiple different file types, readers can generally read ebooks purchased from Areobooks on their favourite device or app.
  • What is Stripe?
  • Stripe is a technology company that allows both private individuals and businesses to accept payments over the Internet. Stripe handles billions of pounds every year for businesses around the world. Areobooks uses Stripe to process all payments on the website. Stripe allows authors to accept payments online securely (it’s similar to PayPal). Stripe has a number of great features, for example: (1) Stripe is secure. Stripe looks after all of the sensitive financial information on its secure servers. Areobooks never sees nor stores this information. (2) Stripe can split payments at the point of sale, which means that authors get paid immediately. See the Pricing and payments page for more details.
  • Is it safe to enter my credit card details online?
  • Areobooks does not store any of your credit card details. Areobooks uses a payment processor called Stripe that looks after all of your financial information. Stripe is used by some of the largest businesses in the world and is secure. That said, Areobooks cannot guarantee the security of your financial details and it is recommended as general safe computing practice that you maintain current security software on your computer.
  • What is Areobooks’s privacy policy?
  • We take the privacy of our users very seriously. We don’t spam and we don’t sell or rent your personal information to third parties. To read our complete privacy policy, click here.
  • What is an ebook?
  • An ebook is simply a book in digital form, readable on your computer or on other reading devices such as your iPhone (or other smart phone), iPad (or other tablet), the Amazon Kindle reader, the Kobo Reader, and many other devices. Once you purchase an ebook on Areobooks, you can read it any way you like, and you can even print it out on your home computer if that’s what you prefer.
  • What is DRM, and does Areobooks use it?
  • DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, and it refers to schemes in which a digital book is copy-protected, or limited to reading on only certain devices. Areobooks does not add any DRM protection to ebooks that are uploaded to the website. However, some ebooks uploaded to Areobooks may include DRM protection. DRM. In any event, ebooks on Areobooks are the property of the copyright holder, and most are only licensed for the personal use of the purchaser.
  • What is ePub?
  • ePub is one of three ebook file types that Areobooks supports. ePub is an open source, industry standard ebook format. ePub is the file type that is read by the majority of e-reading devices and e-reading apps (Amazon’s Kindle and Fire being the notable exceptions).
  • What is mobi?
  • Mobi is one of three ebook file types that Areobooks supports. Mobi is the file type used by Amazon for its Kindle and Kindle Fire devices. If you want to read an ebook on one of these devices you should download the mobi file (or pdf if mobi is not available).
  • What is pdf?
  • Pdf is one of three ebook file types that Areobooks supports. The vast majority of computers, laptops, e-readers and e-reading apps are compatible with pdf documents, but it comes at a cost because pdfs are not reflowable, which means they are not very user friendly (for example, you can’t change the font size). Having said that, some ebooks, such as the Lonely Planet travel guides, work very well as pdfs.

Authors

  • How much does Areobooks cost authors?
  • Until 2017 Areobooks isn’t charging any fees! No subscription fees, no transaction fees, no hidden fees. This means that the only costs of selling ebooks with Areobooks are the fees of our payment processing partner, Stripe, and any applicable sales tax (which Areobooks collects and pays on your behalf). See the Pricing and payment page for more detail.
  • What does Areobooks offer authors?
  • Control. Authors set the price of their ebooks with no strings attached. Also, every author on Areobooks gets their own Author Page that they can personalise and through which they can connect with readers (see the Author Page for more detail). Finally, Areobooks gives authors control over their royalties because it provides certainty over the size of an author’s royalty and authors get paid as soon as Areobooks does (see the Pricing and payment page for more detail).
  • What is an Author Page and how does it work?
  • Your Author Page is entirely your own – you can upload images, videos, tell your readers what you’re up to and keep them updated with your news. You can link to other websites, such as your personal website, blog, Facebook and Twitter to help readers get to know you and your books. And, of course, you can display and sell your ebooks on your Author Page! Readers can “follow” authors through an author’s Author Page. See the Author Page for more detail.
  • What is the Areobooks Author Agreement?
  • The Areobooks Author Agreement contains the additional terms of service for authors that use Areobooks and is binding upon every author that uses Areobooks. It is supplementary to the Reader Agreement. This means that authors who use Areobooks are bound by both the Reader Agreement and the Author Agreement. You can find the Author Agreement here.
  • Is the Author Agreement exclusive?
  • No. The Author Agreement is non-exclusive, so authors maintain all rights to their work and have the freedom to sell their ebooks anywhere else they like. In fact, we encourage authors to sell their ebooks with other retailers because the more distribution channels they have the more likely that their book will become a bestseller!
  • Who can publish on Areobooks?
  • You can publish work with Areobooks if you’re the original author and you control the digital rights to the ebook, or if you’re the exclusive digital publisher. Your work must be original, written by you (or an author to which you have exclusive rights to publish). See the Author Agreement for more information.
  • What can I publish?
  • Areobooks is for finished, complete and original written works only (no drafts, works-in-progress or partial works). It’s great for personal memoirs, short and long form fiction, essays, poetry, screenplays or anything else you can write in a word processor. See the Author Agreement additional content guidelines.
  • What am I not allowed to publish on Areobooks?
  • Do not attempt to publish public domain works, books that advocate hate/racism/homophobia, books that advocate illegal activities, or books in which the content includes word-for-word scrapes from Wikipedia or other public domain or content farm sources. Do not upload content or books that appear elsewhere on the internet authored by people other than yourself or by other pen names. If we do a query on Google of random text strings in your ebook and we discover the same content under other author names, or associated with private label rights or ebook licensing systems, your account will be closed without warning and any earnings may be forfeited. We have a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism, copyright infringement, underage erotica (erotica featuring children under the age of 18) and private label rights.
  • What languages does Areobooks support?
  • Areobooks accepts ebooks of any language.
  • How is the price for my ebook decided?
  • You decide the price of your ebook. You can either list it as FREE, or you can set a price for it. If you set a price for your ebook, the minimum price is 50p and the maximum price is £20.00. You can change the price of your ebook at any time. See the Pricing and payment page for more detail.
  • How does sampling work?
  • When you upload your ebook you must also upload a sample of your ebook that readers can download for free. Providing a free sample is mandatory. However, you decide the size of the free sample: it can be a single page or it can be a number of chapters. Free samples are important because Areobooks has a strict returns policy so readers need to have the chance to try before they buy.
  • How long does it take for my ebook to show up after I upload it?
  • Your ebook should be available for purchase in the Areobooks store within a couple of minutes of upload.
  • Can I publish public domain works?
  • No. If you don’t control the copyright, you can’t upload to Areobooks.
  • Can you upload my ebook for me?
  • No, you must upload your ebook from your internet browser.
  • Can I publish under a pen name but get paid under my real name?
  • Yes. When you set up your author account you can use a pen name as your username. Your username will be shown as the author of the ebooks that you publish with Areobooks. Payments on Areobooks are handled by our payment processing partner, Stripe. When you set up your author account you will be redirected to Stripe so that you can create a Stripe account. When you create your Stripe account you must use your real name.
  • Can I publish under multiple pen names?
  • No. Currently an author only has one username.
  • Will you read my ebook and tell me what you think of it?
  • Sorry, while we’d love to read the ebooks uploaded to Areobooks, we simply do not have the time or the resources.
  • How do I prepare my ebook for upload to Areobooks?
  • Areobooks only accepts ebooks that are ready for sale. This means that before you upload your ebook it must have been converted into at least one of the three file types that we support: ePub, mobi or pdf. As well as preparing the ebook file and a free sample file, you also need to design a cover image for your ebook that will be displayed on the website. You can do this conversion and design yourself or there are lots of companies that will do it for you (for a fee).
  • What file types does Areobooks accept?
  • Areobooks accepts ebooks in three file types: ePub, mobi and pdf. You can upload your ebook in one, two or all three of these file types. We highly recommend that you upload your ebook in all three file types because this gives readers greater flexibility and choice, which in turn makes them more likely to purchase your ebook.
  • What are your requirements for my ebook’s cover image?
  • You must own the copyright to your cover image. The recommended dimensions for your cover image are at least 180 pixels x 270 pixels with a ratio 2:3. Cover images of different dimensions will still upload but they may not look great.
  • What are your requirements for my ebook’s banner image?
  • As well as a cover image, each ebook has a banner image that is displayed on that ebook’s book page. We provide a default banner image but we encourage you to upload your own. If you upload your own banner image, you must own the copyright to that image. The recommended dimensions for your book’s banner image are 1140 pixels x 320 pixels.
  • How do I upload my ebook to Areobooks?
  • It’s simple. To get started, all you need to do is click on the “upload” button, which is in the top right-hand side of most pages. We recommend uploading your ebooks from your computer rather than a mobile device.
  • What happens after I click “publish” and upload my ebook to Areobooks?
  • Your ebook will appear in the Areobooks store and on your Author Page. Areobooks doesn’t exercise any vetting over the ebooks that get uploaded to the site so the process should be pretty instantaneous.
  • I uploaded my ebook to Areobooks successfully but it has disappeared from the ebook store. What has happened?
  • We run validation checks on every ebook that is uploaded to Areobooks. The purpose of the validation checks is to make sure that you have uploaded the correct file types (ePub, mobi or pdf). If you have not uploaded the correct file types, or if there is another problem with your ebook (for example, the free sample text does not match the text of your ebook text), then we will remove your ebook from the site.
  • How do I edit my ebook?
  • Go to the book page for the ebook that you want to edit and click on the “edit book” button. When you are in the “edit book” window you can edit everything about your ebook, including its: cover and background image; title; categories; price; book text; free sample text; available file formats; description; video and letter to reader. When you are finished editing simply click on the “save changes” button.
  • How do I remove my ebook from Areobooks?
  • Go to the book page for the ebook that you want to remove and click on the “edit book” button. Then click on the “delete book” button.
  • How much do I get paid when I sell an ebook?
  • This depends on the price you set for your ebook. If your ebook is FREE, you won’t get paid anything (nor will you be charged anything). If you set a price for your ebook then you will receive the majority of that price as your royalty. See the Pricing and payment page for more detail. This page also contains a Royalty Calculator so you can calculate the amount you will receive from each sale that you make.
  • How do I get paid?
  • Areobooks uses a payment processor called Stripe. The first time you publish an ebook that is not FREE you will be redirected to Stripe to create a Stripe account (or connect to an existing Stripe account if you have one). Each time you sell an ebook your Royalty will be deposited into your Stripe account. You can then transfer your Royalties from your Stripe account to your bank account.
  • How often I get paid?
  • Each time you make a sale your royalty will be deposited in your Stripe account.
  • How are my Royalties calculated?
  • Until 2017 Areobooks isn’t charging any fees! No subscription fees, no transaction fees, no hidden fees. This means that the only costs of selling ebooks with Areobooks are the fees of our payment processing partner, Stripe, and any applicable sales tax (which Areobooks collects and pays on your behalf). See the Pricing and payment page for more detail.
  • Who is responsible for paying sales taxes on my ebook sales?
  • Areobooks collects and pays sales tax on your behalf. Areobooks takes 20% from each sale to cover the sales tax charge (in the UK the relevant sales tax, Value Added Tax, is charged on ebooks at 20%). However, if sales tax is not due then Areobooks will return that 20% to you. You are responsible for all other taxes that may apply to sales of your ebooks (eg. income tax, corporation tax).

Readers

  • How much does Areobooks cost readers?
  • Areobooks has no upfront costs or hidden charges. Readers can create a reader account, their reader profile, their wishlist and browse the full website for free. The only time readers are charged is when they purchase an ebook.
  • What does Areobooks offer readers?
  • Areobooks offers readers choice and the ability to connect with authors. Authors can upload ebooks in multiple file types. When you purchase an ebook you purchase all of these file types, which means that you can download and read that ebook on the majority of e-reading devices. Also, you can follow authors through their Author Page and stay up-to-date with what they’re doing. Finally, knowing that the fee Areobooks charges authors when they sell an ebook is much lower than many (if not all) other ebook retailer, you can purchase ebooks from the Areobooks store confident that the majority of what you pay goes to supporting the creator of that ebook.
  • What is the Areobooks Reader Agreement?
  • The Areobooks Reader Agreement contains the terms of service for the Areobooks site and is binding upon anyone that uses Areobooks, irrespective of whether you have an account or not. You can find the Reader Agreement here.
  • I signed up but haven’t received my account activation email. What do I do next?
  • Usually within five minutes of registering you will receive an account activation email. Click on the hyperlink in the email to complete your registration. If you don’t receive the email within 10 minutes, most likely your email program or email provider has misidentified the email as spam. Look in your spam box. The second most common reason you won’t receive the email is that you gave us the wrong email address, in which case you should re-register. Please configure your email so all email coming from areobooks.com is on your “safe list.” However, if none of the above tips help you locate the email, try re-registering, and if that still doesn’t work please contact us at support@areobooks.com.
  • I’m trying to re-register, but the system tells me my email address is already taken?
  • This means you already successfully completed your registration by clicking the account activation hyperlink we emailed to you. All you need to do now is sign in with your email address and password. If you forgot your password, click the “forgot password?” link to generate a new one.
  • What are the benefits of registering for a reader account?
  • You need a reader account to purchase ebooks on Areobooks. When you register for a reader account a personal, permanent, online library is created for you where you can conveniently access your purchased books in any of the available ebook formats. This is called your Purchase Library. A reader account also allows you to leave reviews for ebooks and follow authors.
  • How do I follow an author?
  • Go to the author’s Author Page and click on the “follow” button. You will then receive email notifications each time that author updates their Author Page. You need to have a reader account before you can follow authors.
  • How do I sample an ebook?
  • When authors upload an ebook they also upload a free sample of their ebook. Authors decide the size of that free sample, so it might be anything from a couple of pages to a number of chapters. When you are on the book page for an ebook click on the “free sample” button and then choose the file type that you would like to download.
  • How do I download a FREE ebook
  • When you are on the book page for a FREE ebook click on the “free” button. You will then be asked what file type you want to download. The available file type(s) will depend on what file type(s) the author uploaded. Check the boxes next to the file types that you would like to download and click on the “download book” button.
  • How do I purchase a priced ebook?
  • When you are on the book page for an ebook click on the “buy” button. There is no shopping cart on Areobooks, so when you click on the “buy” button for an ebook you will go through the payment process immediately. We use a payment processor called Stripe that will need your card details (which they store on their secure website — your card details are never stored on Areobooks) to process the purchase. Once you have successfully purchased an ebook it will appear in your Purchase Library. You can download all your purchased ebooks from your Purchase Library.
  • How much do ebooks cost?
  • Authors decide the price of their ebooks on Areobooks. Each ebooks’ price is clearly displayed next to that ebook.
  • What is my Purchase Library?
  • Your Purchase Library is where all your purchased ebooks are stored (FREE ebooks that you download will not appear in your Purchase Library). You can download your purchased ebooks from your Purchase Library. If the ebook you have purchased is available in multiple file types then all of those file types will be available for download from your Purchase Library. You can download purchased ebooks multiple times, but remember that all ebooks purchased through Areobooks are for personal use only. You are not allowed to copy, share, or email the ebook to others, and you are not allowed to resell or distribute the ebook to others.
  • Some of the ebooks I’ve purchased are available in multiple file types. What does this mean?
  • Authors can upload their ebooks to Areobooks in three file types: ePub, mobi and pdf. The book page for an ebook displays the file types that that ebook is available in. When you purchase an ebook you obtain a license to all the available file types of that ebook on Areobooks. Therefore, if you purchase an ebook that’s available in ePub, mobi and pdf, you can download that ebook in all of those file types. It’s your responsibility to make sure that you purchase ebooks that are available in a file type that is compatible with the device you want to read those ebooks on. For example, don’t purchase an ebook that is only available as an ePub file if you want to read that ebook on your Kindle. See the Getting ebooks onto your favourite device page for more detail.

  • Do I get charged for reading a sample?
  • No. Samples are free.
  • Are books returnable if I don’t like them?
  • No. Sales are final, which is why authors must upload free samples of their ebooks so you can try before you buy. However, if a purchased ebook contains a Technical Fault (as that term is defined in the Areobooks Reader Agreement) then we will provide you with a properly working copy of that ebook file or, if this is not possible, we will refund you or provide you with an Areobooks store credit. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are purchasing an ebook that is available in a file type that is compatible with the device you want to read that ebook on. For example, do not purchase an ebook that is only available as an ePub if you want to read that ebook on your Kindle. See the Getting ebooks onto your favourite device page for more detail.
  • Can I share my purchased ebooks with friends?
  • No. Areobooks ebooks are licensed for your personal reading enjoyment only, so you are not legally allowed to copy, share, or email the ebook to others, and you are not allowed to resell or distribute the ebook to others. This applies to priced ebooks and FREE ebooks. Areobooks authors are trusting you to honour their copyright and hard work, so please do not breach their trust in you. However, most authors offer generous samples of their books, so if you want to share a legal sample of the book, simply email your friends the hyperlink to the book page of the book, or use one of the social networking links to share a link of the book with friends on Facebook, Twitter and other sites.
  • How do I review an ebook?
  • Navigate to the book page of the book you want to review. Below the additional information for the ebook is a link where you can review the ebook. Remember to select a star rating as well.
  • Are my purchases shown to other users?
  • No. Your Purchase Library is private.
  • How do I logout (sign out) of my account?
  • Click on your settings icon that is located in the top right corner of every page. A drop down menu will appear. Click on “Log out”. However, unless you’re working on a shared computer where you don’t want others to receive access to your account, there’s no reason to sign out. We have found that when people sign out, they often forget their password, and then to sign back in they need to create a new password.
  • I forgot my password. What do I do?
  • Click the “Forgot password” link under the sign-in box on the home page.

  • What is an ISBN?
  • An ISBN is a unique number that identifies your ebook. Many ebook retailers require an ISBN in order for them to stock your ebook on their digital shelves. It’s how they keep track of orders of your ebook. It’s also how they keep track of the ebook inside their own systems. The number is registered with the international ISBN agency and in theory it helps customers and sales outlets (retailers, libraries, distributors) discover your book and differentiate it from other books. In reality, however, customers search for books by title, author or topic, and rarely by ISBN.
  • Do I need an ISBN to publish or Areobooks?
  • No. If your ebook has an ISBN number then you can provide it when you upload your ebook, but a valid ISBN is not a requirement to publish your ebook with Areobooks.
  • Will Areobooks assign me an ISBN?
  • Areobooks does not use ISBNs.
